SYLVANIA — Lourdes University Division of Education hosted an Aspiring Teacher Day on Nov. 17.
About150 high school juniors and seniors from Penta Career Center, Perrysburg Schools, Sylvania Schools and Washington Local Schools gained information from Lourdes professors and education students and teaching professionals. Attendees participated in hands-on learning activities, panel discussions and heard a keynote speech from Matt Smith, principal of Swanton Middle School.
According to the Ohio Education Association and the Center for American Progress, fewer individuals are choosing to become teachers. As the number of educators who have chosen to retire early or resign has risen, the need for teachers is increasingly critical.
Lourdes University has a track record of preparing excellent teachers through several undergraduate and graduate programs including primary, middle, adolescence to young adult and special education. One-hundred percent of Lourdes’ 2021-22 education graduates obtained teaching jobs.
Lourdes awards $8.5 million a year to university students in institutional scholarships, grants and awards. High school students enrolled at several nearby schools benefit from dual enrollment and educational partnerships that allow them to get a head start on their college studies.
