BG Ice Cats advance to International Silver Stick finals

Bowling Green youth hockey will be well-represented as two travel teams head north.

The weekend of Nov. 18-20, the BG Ice Cat travel program went to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to compete in the International Silver Stick Regional Tournament for a chance to represent BG amongst both American and Canadian youth hockey programs.

BG Youth Hockey Association Tony Lake said that “while the competition was fierce,” BG’s 10U Squirt and 12U Pee Wee teams were both able to outplay their opponents and advance unbeaten, earning a bid to the International Silver Stick finals in January.

The 10U Squirt team will travel to Sarnia, Ontario, on Jan. 13-15 while the 12U Pee Wee team will compete in the Port Huron, Michigan, hosted finals Jan. 19-23.

The 10U BG Ice Cats defeated the Grosse Ile Islanders 11-0, the Louisville Cardinals 5-2, the Islanders again 7-1, and the Cardinals 6-1, for the championship. BG goalie Ellis Nicholson was named Tournament MVP.

The 12U BG ice Cats defeated the Columbus Mavericks 1-0, the Toledo Cherokees 3-2, the Lake Erie Panthers 6-0, and the Cherokees again 3-1, in the championship. BG defenseman Bobby Pekarik was the tournament MVP with a three-goal hat trick in the championship game.

The 10U Ice Cat head coach is Nick Snyder and his assistants are Nick Bilanow, David Archer and Tony Wulff.
