Falcons log season-best attack percentage in three-set sweep over Akron

Bowling Green State University volleyball completed the weekend sweep over the Akron Zips with a three-set victory Saturday. The Falcons logged a season-best .364 attack percentage, registering a mark of .355 or better in each set of the match. The Falcons came back to win the first set in extra points before holding the Zips to 12 points in the second set and 16 in the third.

The Falcons were paced on the attack by Katelyn Meyer with 11 kills followed closely by Mia Tyler with nine and Petra Indrova with eight. Yelianiz Torres added 19 digs for the Orange and Brown while Jessica Andrews and Tyler each added five blocks to the effort. The win moves the Falcons to 17-9 on the season with a 12-3 conference record.

How It Happened

Set 1: Bowling Green 27, Akron 25

The Falcons and Zips picked up where they left off Friday, playing to the media timeout without a break. At the media break, Akron held a slim lead of 15-13.

Out of the media timeout, Akron tallied two more points to increase their lead to 17-13 and force a BGSU timeout.

Later in the set the Falcons put together a 4-1 stretch to cut the score to 22-20 Akron, resulting in a Zips timeout.

The Falcons continued to chip away at the Akron lead, forcing extra points before taking the first set with a 27-25 score.

Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Akron 12

The second set began close as well, but a 3-0 run for the Falcons pushed BGSU out in front 12-9 to prompt an Akron timeout.

The Falcons continued to increase their lead, bringing it to 18-11 at the next stoppage, coming via an Akron timeout.

BGSU held the lead through the end of the set, closing it out with a 7-1 stretch for a 25-12 set win.

Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Akron 16

The Falcons put together an early 4-0 run in the third set to take a 9-4 lead and force an Akron timeout.

Bowling Green continued to add to the lead before another Akron timeout with the Falcons leading 17-9.

BGSU was able to maintain the lead through the end of the set for a 25-16 win to clinch the match sweep.

Petra Indrova tallied eight kills in the match, bringing her career total to 1,287. That mark moves Indrova to 10th all-time in program history for career kills. Indrova finished with a .316 attack percentage, one of six players to hit above the .310 mark.

Tyler landed nine kills for the Falcons with a .429 attack percentage, matching her career-high. Tyler added five block assists to her stat line, setting a new career-high for both block assists and total blocks in a match.

Meyer landed a team-high 11 kills on a team-high 29 attacks for the Falcons, finishing with a .310 attack percentage.

Torres paced the Falcons in digs with 19, adding four assists and an ace to her stat line.

Madelynn Luebcke logged a season-high three blocks assists for the Falcons in the match.

Jessica Andrews ended tied for the team-lead in blocks with one solo and four assists. She added three kills with a .333 hitting percentage as well.

Lauryn Hovey posted a .385 attack percentage for the Falcons with six kills, three digs, two aces and two block assists.

Jaden Walz and Hanna Laube partnered as the setters for the Falcons. Walz ended with 19 assists and seven digs while Laube tallied 14 assists and two digs.

The Falcons have now won 22 of the last 24 matches against the Akron Zips.

The Falcons will return to the road next weekend, traveling to Buffalo, New York, for two matches against the Bulls. Friday’s match is set for a 6 p.m. first serve before a 7 p.m. start on Saturday.
