Jackets down Panthers, claim NLL title

PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg’s 51-21 win over rival Maumee Friday in the final Northern Lakes League episode of the Ding-Dong Bell rivalry guarantees the Yellow Jackets an outright conference championship.

The Yellow Jackets finish the regular season 9-1 and a perfect 7-0 in the NLL and will host a Division I playoff game next weekend.

Maumee, which is moving to the Northern Buckeye Conference next season, finishes the season winless in 10 games.

At Steinecker Stadium Friday, the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 42-7 halftime lead and accumulated 468 yards of total offense. Perrysburg had 18 first downs to Maumee’s six.

Perrysburg senior southpaw quarterback T.J. Takats completed 14-of-24 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and University of Toledo-bound senior running back Connor Walendzak ran for 154 yards on 16 carries and three TDs.

Walendzak had TD runs of 4, 1, and 21 yards, and Takats threw a six-yard TD pass to Jack Borer and 19-yard pass to Borer for another TD.

Takats also scored on a seven-yard run and Dylan Blubaugh scored Perrysburg’s final TD on an 18-yard run.

For Perrysburg, Borer caught eight passes for 96 yards, Walendzak caught three passes for 37 yards, Gavin Fenneken had two catches for 24 yards, and Nick Oros had two catches for 14 yards. Back-up QB Josh Takats also threw a pass for 10 yards.

Blubaugh had four carries for 49 yards, T.J. Takats had six carries for 39 yards, Oros ran with the ball five times for 23 yards, and Aiden Owens had four carries for 17 yards.

Defensively for Perrysburg, Avery Hunt, Andrew Hunt, and Paul Walkosky had one sack each.

Maumee got a first quarter score when Kyle Arndt threw a 64-yard TD pass to Carson Graetz, and Anrdt threw a 32-yard TD pass to Graetz in the third quarter. Arndt threw a 15-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Arndt completed 10-of-14 passes for 162 yards and three TDs, and he ran for 79 yards on 17 carries. Graetz caught five passes for 116 yards.
