Evening with Ebone benefits Welcome BG

A fundraising event, An Evening with Ebone, is set for Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at on Thursday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, featuring Toledo Opera soprano Ebone Waweru, accompanied by Kevin McGill on piano.

The evening will benefit Welcome BG, a non-profit organization with a mission to continue to develop and promote Bowling Green as a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for all, including new Americans, people of diverse background, immigrants and refugees. According to the press release, 1,203 residents in Bowling Green are foreign born (1.7% Asia, 0.7% Latin America); 61.2% of residents speak other language other than English.

Waweru is a regular performer with Toledo Opera and other community theater productions.

McGill has a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Evansville and a Master of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Bowling Green State University.

McGill taught at Bowling Green State University and Bluffton University and was an organist and Director of Music Ministry at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for 20 years. He’s currently adjunct assistant professor of piano and choral accompanist at BGSU, pianist for The Masterworks Chorale, and organist at St. Mark’s.

Tickets are $40 and $20 for students with ID. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance by calling 567-413-4003 or email [email protected]. This will be an evening of music, silent auction and international appetizers.

All proceeds benefits Welcome BG and its programs.

WBG has hosted events such as International Education Week, community discussions and a COVID vaccination drive; addressed continuing food insecurity among international students at BGSU; promoted language access; guided newcomers to resources as they navigated new surroundings; collaborated with local social agencies who provided needed services; and hosted events that celebrated diversity, inclusion, cultural vibrancy and promoted a sense of belonging.

Welcome BG is a non-profit organizations and all gifts and contributions are tax-deductible.
