(updated 11:15 p.m.) BG’s boys rally falls short at Maumee (1-10-14)

MAUMEE —After trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, Bowling Green boys’ basketball team
used cut-throat defense to claw its way back to within one-point of Maumee in the fourth quarter Friday.

However, the Panthers held on for a 72-63 victory.
In what proved to be a tense Northern Lakes League matchup, which included technical fouls called on both
teams and a skirmish at half-court, BG lacked consistency at both ends of the court and, as a result,
dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the league.
BG trailed 32-14 with 2:04 left in the second quarter. By the end of the third quarter, it had narrowed
Maumee’s victory to single digits at 50-42. The Bobcats’ pursuit continued in the fourth quarter as they
closed to within 53-52 with 4:30 left to play before Maumee took back control of the game at the
free-throw line.
It was BG’s defensive effort that allowed the Bobcats to slash into Maumee’s lead with trapping and heavy
on-the-ball pressure.
“That is the way we are supposed to be playing from tip to buzzer,” BG coach Mark Malinowski said. “It
took us being down by 18 points to play like that.
“We want to wreak havoc like that the entire game.”
BG’s LaMonta´ Stone paced all scorers with 23 points. Aiden Markey had 12 points and Trent Hinton added
10.
Rebounding was costly for the Bobcats in the loss. Maumee edged BG 38-28 in rebounding.
“We got hurt on the boards, and that has been a constant theme throughout the year so far,” Malinowski
said.
BG showed bright glimpses on offense, but it began stagnant which allowed Maumee to build its early lead.
The Bobcats scored only five points in the first quarter.
“I think we started the game with a lot of good, open shots. The problem was, we came down too many times
and it was one pass and a shot. We’ve got to get these guys to be a little more patient at times. I
think we did a little better at that in the second half,” Malinowski said.
BG also started to hit more perimeter shots in the fourth quarter (two each by Hinton and Markey), which
helped the Bobcats get back in the game.
Hinton’s 3-pointer brought BG to within one point at 53-52 with 4:30 left in the fourth.
BG’s fourth-quarter surge came following a technical foul being issued to a Maumee player after a heated
exchange between players of both teams at half-court. Hinton went to the line with five minutes to go.
He made one of two free throws amidst loud “boos” from the Maumee crowd.
Less than three minutes later, a BG player was issued a technical foul in a separate rebounding incident.
