OLD FORT — At halftime, the Bowling Green girls basketball team game-planned to get the ball inside
Led by Tyanna Smith, the Bobcats responded with a 25-point third quarter on the way to a 68-48 win over
Port Clinton Saturday. BG led 30-27 at the half.
The game was a Division II sectional final played at Old Fort High School.
The Bobcats, 13-11 overall, advance to the district semifinal Thursday at 8 p.m. against Toledo Rogers at
Perrysburg High School.
‘‘We thought we could get after them with a little pressure, and we thought if that rattled them, we
could really get after them in the post,’’ BG head coach Jeff Nichols said.
‘‘We talked about it at halftime to make sure we got a couple of our set-play looks inside and finish
them,’’ he continued. ‘‘That enabled us to do what we wanted to do in the second half.’’
Smith, a 6-foot junior, scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the second half.
‘‘We knew that she could score, and she’s worked hard all year to try to get agile around the basket. She
finished tonight, and I’m proud of her for that,’’ Nichols said.
‘‘It feels great. We worked hard in the third quarter and the fourth, and we finished the game strong,’’
Smith said. ‘‘I was in a zone to win. My teammates made excellent passes. They made it work.
‘‘Last year, we didn’t get this far,’’ Smith added. ‘‘I feel playing against Perrysburg and Anthony Wayne
really set us up for this type of game.’’
Bowling Green led 13-9 after eight minutes. With freshman Kendal Glandorff scoring eight points in the
second quarter, the Bobcats were up 30-27 at the half.
Port Clinton stayed in the game by making 9-of-10 free throws in the second quarter.
‘‘Even when it was close in the first half, it was a battle,’’ said Port Clinton head coach Toby Bickel.

The Bobcats built a 45-35 lead with 4:47 left in the third quarter, and were up 55-43 heading into the
final eight minutes. Six different Bobcats scored in the third quarter.
‘‘We were trying to mix in a few zones, and some man-to-man,’’ Bickel said. ‘‘But you get to a point
where you get down a little bit, and you can’t go to the zone because they are just going to hold it.
Then you have to go back to man.’’
Bowling Green put the under-manned Redskins away in the final quarter with Smith scoring 10 points.
‘‘When things started going our way and she (Smith) was working inside, it just got away from them (Port
Clinton),’’ Nichols said.
Glandorff added 12 points for Bowling Green while Livvy Dill and Hanna Williford each scored 10 points.

‘‘They are a very good basketball team,’’ Bickel said about the Bobcats. ‘‘They are athletic, they’re
long, they play a great schedule. We got beat by a better team tonight.’’
Tiffany Colston scored 18 points and Hannah Weaver added 14 for Port Clinton, which finished 17-5. The
Redskins had to play without Hope Thorbahn, who scored over 1,000 points in her career at Port Clinton.
She was suspended from the team.
Now, the Bobcats face Toledo Rogers, who were 12th in the final state Division II poll.
‘‘It’s going to get tougher as we go, but at least we’re going to get to go,’’ Nichols said.
