Bowling Green’s boys basketball team rallied from a 24-20 halftime deficit to force overtime, but came up
short in a 55-53 loss to Maumee.
The Panthers scored the final three points of overtime to earn the win.
“It’s always tough to lose a game, but then when you lose a game in overtime and on Senior Night, we just
wanted to send our seniors out on the right note,” said BG coach Mark Malinowski.
“The reason we hung in the game is because the guys played with a lot of heart and they gave it all they
had,” he added. e
With 31 seconds remaining in overtime, BG led 53-52. But Maumee gained back the lead for good at 54-53
when senior Cam Carsey was called for his fifth foul of the game on a basket by Brian Utter.
“From our perspective, it looked like a charge,” Malinowski said. “If that call would have went the other
way, with the senior taking the charge, we would have been up one. It was a big call, but you can’t
blame a game on a referee.”
BG held a narrow 39-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter after finally seeing some of its shots fall
on offense. The Bobcats scored 19 points in the third quarter.
With 14 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Maumee took a 46-44 lead on two made free throws.
Cue, Aidan Markey.
After not seeing the court all game, Markey came in with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth
quarter.
Markey grabbed an offensive rebound with four seconds remaining and was fouled while shooting. He knocked
down both free throws to tie the game at 46 and forced overtime.
“The thing about Aidan Markey is you know he is always going to be ready. We have put him in situations
like that before and he has hit big threes or made big defensive plays for us,” Malinowski said.
LaMontá Stone led all scorers with 23 points. Trent Hinton and Mitchell Gardner also had 10 points each
for BG (4-17, 2-11).
Utter led the Panthers (4-15, 3-9) with 18 points.
BG’s defense stifled Maumee throughout the game. The Bobcats forced 17 turnovers and committed only two.

“There were several missed layups. We would turn them over and then we would attack the basket, but we
wouldn’t finish all the time,” Malinowski said.
The Bobcats’ shooting was also cold for much of the game.
“We told them at halftime we shot 20 percent from the field and they weren’t unbalanced or rushed shots,”
Malinowski said. “The shots just weren’t falling.”
BG was out-rebounded 44-27.
In the junior varsity game, BG won 56-36. Preston Morman and Aaron Donaldson each had 14 points, and
Jacob Leader chipped in 12.
