Northwood gets $800,000 to spruce up city housing

NORTHWOOD – Some homes in the city will be getting a new lease on life thanks to a recent grant award.

Northwood is among 39 communities in the state awarded Community Housing Impact and Preservation grants
to assist with rental payment assistance and rehabilitating, repairing, and constructing affordable
housing for low-income Ohioans.
The CHIP grants total nearly $27 million.
Wood County will receive an $800,000 grant to partner with the city of Northwood to complete the
rehabilitation of 10 homes, repairs at 22 homes, and help build two homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Bob Anderson, Northwood’s municipal administrator, said this morning that the city has participated in
this program in the past, and passed an ordinance in April to apply again with Wood County.
"It’s designed to help rehab houses in low-to-moderate income areas," he said. "And the
city of Northwood’s got a few of those."
"We’re kind of a blue-collar city," he said. "We’re doing OK, but we’ve got some need for
some remodelling, if you will. And this allows people that fit in that income (bracket) to borrow money.
And I think, after a number of years, (the loan) is even forgiven."
Anderson indicated that the city will be working with Poggemeyer Design Group on the grants’ projects.

"It’s going to help a few people in Northwood to remodel their homes. If you can fix up a
neighborhood or two, that always helps the general population. We’re more than happy that Wood County
was able to get the grant."
