Jim Schneider, a former Sentinel-Tribune sportswriter from 1974-1978, who retired as a media and
relations director from the University of Michigan due to ill health in 2008, will be memorialized on
Friday at the Jung Family Champions Center on the UM campus at 33 E. Stadium Blvd in Ann Arbor from 4 to
6 p.m.
The service is open to the public and all Jim’s friends are welcome.
Jim, 63, passed away in his sleep at home in Ann Arbor on July 22 due to heart failure.
A native of East Hampton, NY, Jim graduated from East Hampton High School in 1969 before enrolling at
BGSU as a journalism major. It was there he launched his career in sports media as a student assistant
in BGSU’s sports information department.
Upon graduation in 1974, Jim accepted a post with the Sentinel-Tribune as a sportswriter.
In 1978, Jim joined the University of Michigan’s athletic media relations office and stayed there for
over 30 years. During his tenure Jim worked closely with the football, baseball, and ice hockey
programs. He maintained his office in Schembechler Hall and worked closely with coaches Bo Schembechler,
Gary Moeller, and Lloyd Carr.
He is remembered by his colleagues for his humor, intelligence, empathy, and his ability to communicate
and network.
Jim was born on April 26, 1951 to the late Harrison and Margaret Schneider of East Hampton, NY.
He is survived by two brothers, Harrison Jr. of Batavia, IL and Richard of Manorville, NY, as well as a
sister, Margaret Gatto of The Woodlands, TX. He is also survived by two nieces, five nephews, and many
grand-nephews and nieces.
The family has established the "Schneids Go Blue Fund" to benefit the University of Michigan
Athletic Department. The funds will be earmarked for athletic scholarships.
