County mental health services offer hope

To the Editor:
Many years ago I was confronted in a very direct manner with the realities of mental illness when a
member of my family was suffering from depression and acute anxiety. That real life experience motivated
me to become a member of the former Mental Health Board of Wood County where I also served as president.

Later while on the faculty and staff at Wright State University I continued with my volunteer role in
helping citizens fight real life problems as a board member of Dayton’s Eastway Center, one of the
largest mental health agencies of its kind in Ohio.
This pattern of volunteerism has heightened my awareness and sharpened my senses about the day to day
struggles of so many citizens, including friends and many acquaintances, who are struggling with
alcohol, drug addiction and mental health issues.
Today, in my role as Mayor, I serve as the Chair of the Community Coalition of Youth and Family, a round
table discussion group of educators, social service workers, law enforcement and university personnel.
The CCYF is an attempt to effect a closer and a more focused collaborative relationship in addressing
some of the most pressing needs associated with youth prevention programs and such complex issues as
bullying, adolescent substance abuse and dysfunctional childhood behavior.
Without question, I will be voting for the 1.6 mill renewal levy on the Nov. 4 ballot in support of the
all important work of the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board and
related agencies. Please vote for hope and care. Treatment works!
Richard A. Edwards
Mayor of Bowling Green
