2 new fathers among candidates running in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio has two new fathers among its candidates for statewide office, and many of
the competitors haven’t been shy about including their kids in their campaigns.

State Treasurer Josh Mandel on Monday announced to campaign supporters the arrival of a son, Judah, born
eight days earlier.

Mandel, a Republican incumbent, faces Democratic state Rep. Connie Pillich in November in one of the
cycle’s closer races.

He featured his 1-year-old daughter, Rosie, and then-pregnant wife in a campaign ad titled "Bright
Future," while Pillich featured her two children in a TV spot called "Our Mom."

Attorney general candidate David Pepper also welcomed a baby this year.

Five-month-old Jack is pictured on Pepper’s Facebook page and with his parents on a campaign mailer.
Pepper has yet to air ads in his bid to unseat incumbent Republican Mike DeWine. DeWine, father of eight
and grandfather of 20, features his three grown daughters in a campaign ad.

Democratic state Rep. John Patrick Carney features footage with his children and family in one of his
television ads, too. He’s facing Auditor Dave Yost, the Republican incumbent, in a race that’s becoming
increasingly negative.
