STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — State police say they seized
$43,000 in untaxed cigars from a storage unit in suburban Detroit that
may be linked to a smuggling ring.
Police say a Rochester Hills
man was arrested Tuesday for violation of the Tobacco Products Tax Act
after the discovery in Sterling Heights.
Police say a number of
brands of cigars were seized. Police say the man, whose name wasn’t
immediately released, is believed to be part of a large, organized
tobacco smuggling ring operating in the Detroit area. An investigation
into the case is ongoing.
It’s against the law in Michigan to possess, acquire, transport or sell any quantity of untaxed tobacco.
