BG Police warn of phone scam

Bowling Green Police are warning residents to be on the lookout after a city woman was tricked in a phone
buying scam Tuesday.
Police Chief Brad Conner said that the woman was approached Tuesday by two black males who indicated that
they were from the Toledo area.
The men said they were trying to buy two new iPhone 6s, but could not do so because of credit problems.

They offered her $80 if she could add two new phone lines to her personal phone account, enabling them to
get the phones. They said a friend with a cell phone company would later remove the lines.
The woman reportedly took the men to a Verizon store and also to WalMart in Bowling Green in an attempt
to assist them – they even partially paid off a phone bill balance and gave her $10 for gas – but was
unsuccessful.
"As it turns out, they were not able to purchase the phones because of the problems with credit
between the two parties," said Conner.
Conner said that the woman’s friends later told her she should report the incident.
"Clearly they were setting her up for a fraud," said Conner. "In this case they didn’t get
away with it."
Conner said that, had the men been successful, they could have sold the iPhones for around $1,000 and the
phone lines would have remained on the woman’s bill, for her to pay.
