One small change could help the planet

To the Editor:
We have only one planet to live on and I believe that we should do all we can to protect it, and keep it
livable for future generations.
Pollution is a main contributor to the planet becoming unlivable and the pollution I see most often in my
day to day life, here in Bowling Green is plastic bag litter. Not only is it unsightly, but rouge
plastic bags can clog sewage drains and harm wildlife.
According to reusethisbag.com, plastic bag pollution was one of the causes of a flood in Bangladesh and
many animals mistake plastic bags for food, which leads to death if they are eaten.
There are alternatives to plastic bags that are much better for our earth which is why I support a ban on
single-use plastic bags in big box stores that is being discussed. This action could be a chance for
Bowling Green to be an example for other cities, and for the entire state, to show that local
governments can make big changes.
This particular change is just the tip of the iceberg in term of protecting the planet but it’s a start.
I can see no reason the city shouldn’t try to reduce the amount of waste we create, especially if it
means saving money on litter clean up and storm drain maintenance (as has been seen in areas where
plastic bags have been banned.)
This change might inconvenience us at first, but we will learn to bring our own bags by the time the next
generation are adults, they won’t know any different. I encourage everyone to at least start to think
about the amount of unnecessary waste we create and how much we could easily cut out.
Maybe bring a reusable bag with you next time you go shopping and see how better our city could be if we
all made that one change.
