Public should participate in bag discussion

To the Editor:
Should the Bowling Green City Council take steps to regulate single use plastic bags? This issue is
currently being discussed by the Bowling Green City Council Public Improvement Committee. An issue of
this requires a large amount of debate and consideration. It is the responsibility of the community to
actively participate in this debate.
It is also the responsibility of all of us to mitigate human impacts on the environment. one of these
being single use plastic bags ending up in our landfills. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
states that only 9 percent of single use plastic bags make it to a proper recycling location. What can
we do to change this statistic?
The last two meetings of the public improvement committee on Feb. 19 and March 4, the committee asked the
community to come up with policy solutions with the majority of the support so far in favor of a ban on
single use plastic bags. As a member of the Bowling Green community, I would like to urge others to
attend the meeting on Monday and have an active voice in the current debate.
