Bag talk is bringing BG together

To the Editor:
The current discussion about banning single-use plastic bags in Bowling Green has brought together
residents of various walks of life. Temporary residents (i.e. students) and long-term residents are
sharing their ideas, opinions, information, and concerns about the initiative. This conversation shows
the consciousness of Bowling Green in regard to environmental problems and being a sustainable city.
The previous two public meetings of the community improvement committee have demonstrated the
overwhelming support for a single-use plastic bag ban.
However, the discussion extends far beyond the environment. It is an example of the power of bringing a
community together. I have been attending city council meetings for the last year and a half. I have
never seen so much attendance at a public meeting than during this discussion. Council members get to
hear multiple perspectives and people get to share their voice. Imagine if there was this much
participation at every city council meeting. Our elected representatives are able to truly represent our
voices and our opinions when the public shares our voice with them.
It is imperative that we attend these meetings to learn and to teach. We can learn about events and
changes in our community. We can teach about potential projects or share our concerns at these meetings.
City council meets on the third floor of the city administration building, 304 N. Church St., every
first and third Monday at 7 p.m. The meetings are usually an hour or less. Attending meetings is a
simple way to build a sense of community empowerment.
The single-use plastic bag initiative may go on to a public ballot vote in the future. If it does, we
must be educated voters. Attend meetings, share your voice. City Council wants to hear from us all.
Every single person in our community is valued and has ideas worth sharing. Share yours on at the 6 p.m.
community improvement committee meeting or the 7 p.m. city council meeting.
