TOLEDO – A highly productive third quarter was the difference Saturday afternoon in the boys Division I
district final in Savage Arena.
Lima Senior out-scored Perrysburg 19-4 in the third quarter on the way to a 58-44 victory.
The Spartans (21-4) now face Toledo Start (22-3), a 31-30 winner over Toledo Whitmer in Saturday’s first
game. The regional semifinal is Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Savage Arena.
“We had a couple of good looks, but they hit some shots right away and it’s no doubt it snowballed
quick,” Perrysburg head coach Dave Boyce said about the start of the second half. “You have got to give
them credit, they smelled blood in the water and they went after it.
“I think their depth was the difference,” Boyce added.
Perrysburg was also hampered in the game by 23 turnovers, which resulted in 28 points for the Spartans.

“Part of it was our passes weren’t very strong,” Boyce said. “Part of it was that they sped us up. We
talked to our kids that we couldn’t let them do that and they did. That’s really the story of the game.”

In the first quarter both teams shot 50 percent from the field, but Lima Senior held a 17-14 lead after
eight minutes. The Spartans hit three 3-pointers in the quarter and the Yellow Jackets were hurt by
seven turnovers which resulted in 10 points for Lima Senior.
Perrysburg scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to take an 18-17 lead. Lima Senior then
out-scored the Yellow Jackets 12-3 to lead 29-21 at the halftime break. The Spartans again shot 50
percent from the field and scored five more points off the Yellow Jackets turnovers. The Yellow Jackets
also had problems at the free-throw line, going 1-of-4 and missing the front end of two 1-and-1s in the
quarter.
“We had some chances in the second quarter to go into halftime tied or right there. We missed a couple of
free throws and a couple of layups and obviously we threw the ball away a couple of times,” Boyce said.

The onslaught continued as the Spartans scored the first 13 points in the third quarter. Perrysburg
finally got on the scoreboard with a free throw from Preston Evans with 2:56 left in the quarter. Lima
Senior held a 48-25 lead going into the fourth quarter, scoring nine points off seven Perrysburg
turnovers.
Josiah Fulcher scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter for the Spartans.
“In halftime we normally keep the guys in a little too long because I talk too much. But we just wanted
to keep them in there a few minutes,” Spartans head coach Quincey Simpson said. “We wanted to get them
out here and get them shooting. I didn’t want my guys sitting. I wanted them up shooting, getting loose
and staying loose and I thought that helped.”
The Yellow Jackets did rally in the fourth quarter, out-scoring the Spartans 19-10 but the outcome had
already been decided. Ben Boros scored seven of his 12 points in the fourth quarter for Perrysburg and
teammate Jackson Sizemore added five of his 13 points.
Perrysburg finished 15-11.
“It was a different kind of year. We had injuries, we had sickness and we had a very tough schedule,”
Boyce said. “We could never really put a bunch of wins together in a row to get some traction.
“Early in the tournament we got some confidence … and we had a really nice run.”
