The Bowling Green hockey team defeated Alabama Huntsville 7-1 on Saturday night, closing out the regular
season with a series split after Alabama Huntsville took the first game of the series on Friday night
4-2.
The Falcons finish the season at 21-9-5, including 16-8-4-3 (55 points) against WCHA opponents. BG earns
the third seed for the conference playoffs, while the Chargers close out their season at 8-26-2 and
8-18-2-2 (28 points) in the WCHA to earn the eighth seed.
BG will open WCHA tournament play at 7:37 p.m. Friday at home against Michigan Tech.
The Falcons grabbed an early lead, as freshman forward Alex Barber capitalized on an early power play
opportunity to make it a 1-0 game just a minute and 12 seconds into the game. The scoring did not stop
there as junior forward Frederic Letourneau scored at 7:08 to give the team a 2-0 lead, then junior
defenseman Alec Rauhauser followed it up with another goal on the power play just a minute and nine
seconds after Letourneau’s goal.
“I thought our compete level was pretty high throughout the first period,” Falcons head coach Chris
Bergeron said. “That kind of set the tone for the rest of the game, it was 5-0 after the first period
which makes it difficult for them and we have to maintain that level, which is difficult for us, so I
think that the first period was probably the major difference for us between tonight and last night.”

At the 9:54 mark, sophomore forward Max Johnson found the back of the net on another power play
opportunity, making it a 4-0 game, while Alabama Huntsville had managed only one shot on goal. This
prompted Alabama Huntsville to pull senior goaltender Jake Theut in favor of regular starter Mark
Sinclair. Despite this, the Falcons were able to add on another goal at 13:15 with senior forward John
Schilling hitting the back of the net to make it a 5-0 game, a lead the Falcons would hold through the
end of the period.
The second period would see Alabama Huntsville put Theut back in net, however, Falcons freshman forward
Taylor Schneider scored 1:58 into the second period. Alabama Huntsville freshman forward Bauer Neudecker
was able to break the shutout at the 5:57 mark, but both teams would be shut out throughout the rest of
the period as the Falcons took a 6-1 advantage into the third period.
In the third period, the Falcons tacked on a goal at the 9:18 mark as Schilling earned his second goal of
the game, allowing the Falcons to go on to claim the 7-1 victory and lock up third place in the WCHA
final standings.
Falcons junior goaltender Ryan Bednard picked up the win, making 10 saves on 11 Alabama Huntsville shots,
while Theut took the loss with 24 saves on 30 Falcon shots. Sinclair had a no decision as he made four
saves on five chances.
The Falcons scored goals on three of their six power play opportunities on the night, while Alabama
Huntsville was shut out on all three of its power play chances.
“Tonight was just one of those nights when pucks went in (on the power play),” Bergeron said. “I thought
we were taking what was there, we made some good plays, got them spread out a little bit a couple of
times, Alex Barber’s goal got us going in the first period there, so I think it’s a group that’s
capable, we’ve just got to do it for more of the time.”
