Photography students work with people with disabilities on museum exhibit

The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities announced the opening of the exhibit, “Speaking Of,”
a collaborative project between Lynn Whitney’s senior level photography students at Bowling Green State
University and WCBDD.
The exhibit opens with a reception at the Toledo Museum of Art at 6 p.m. Friday in the Community
Gallery.
Mollie Tyrrell and Melissa Frizado will preview the fifth-annual “Speaking Of” exhibit for the Exchange
Club at Stone Ridge Golf Club at noon today .
The collaboration between BGSU and the WCBDD began five years ago in Adult Services. Since the
privatizations of Adult Services in October, the program has shifted to the Operations Recreation
department. Each photography student in the class is paired with an individual served by the WCBDD and
they get to know them through their camera lens. This year, the individuals served by WCBDD had the
opportunity to learn about photography and their photos will also be part of the exhibit. It’s a process
that has built lifelong relationships between individuals served and their photographer.
The program is invaluable to the WCBDD for its ability to bring awareness to not only the student taking
the photos and getting to know an individual with a developmental disability, but also anyone who views
the art.
When others recognize and understand the individuals served by the WCBDD, the board can advance the
vision of individuals with developmental disabilities living, working and participating as contributing
members of their community.
The exhibit will be available for viewing in the Toledo Museum of Art’s Community Gallery until Aug. 6.
