The Optimal Aging Institute at Bowling Green State University has announced its list of spring programs
intended for middle-aged or older adults and those who work with them.
On April 20, the institute will present a program titled “Communicating with Loved Ones who have
Dementia: Practical Pointers” at 5:30 p.m. The Optimal Aging Institute is located at 102 Health and
Human Services Building.
Do you have a loved one who suffers from dementia? Do you provide services to people with dementia?
Communicating with people with dementia can be challenging and frustrating for both parties. In this
workshop, you will learn some simple strategies to help make communication easier. We will also discuss
communication-based activities that can provide stimulation and mental exercise for people with
dementia. The presenter will be Brent Archer, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication sciences and
disorders at BGSU, who specializes in aphasia and has both professional and personal experience working
with people with degenerative brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The Optimal Aging Institute was created in 2016 to help middle-aged and older adults, and those who work
with them, explore the seven dimensions of health, wellness and resiliency. As part of its mission, the
Institute provides learning opportunities and educational materials focusing on optimal aging for
service providers, health systems, entrepreneurs, corporations, caregivers and older adults.
