OAK HARBOR — Six Bowling Green High School students won awards in recognition for their entries in the
annual Ohio Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest in a ceremony held Sunday at the Ottawa National Wildlife
Refuge.
First-place awards were presented to Etta Gallaway, 10th grade and Ethan Fletcher, 11th grade.
Second-place awards went to Lucie Moore and Abby Ray, 11th grade. Avery Lewis and Rona Mejiritski, 11th
grade, won third-place awards. Each student received a certificate of participation and a plaque.
Keren Sung, 13, of Dublin, won Best of Show for her green-winged teal in color pencil, which qualifies
her to compete in the national competition April 21 in Charleston, S.C.
Bowling Green students also won in another age category. Taking home honors in the kindergarten to third
grade category were: Spencer Ramos, Alexandria Nelson, Adrianna Chatman, Micah Twigg, Kamryn Spencer,
Kasidy Morrow and Sudashini Seth.
The program is a curriculum-based art competition where children create an original drawing or painting
of waterfowl as their “visual term paper” to share what they have learned about waterfowl and wetland
conservation. Every state participates in the program. The winning Best of Show artwork selected at the
national level is made into the Junior Duck Stamp. The collectible stamp is sold for $5 with proceeds
supporting the program.
This year 145 entries were submitted in Ohio. The contest is divided into four age-related competitions
(K-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12). Each group is awarded three first, second and third places and 16 Honorable
Mentions. The Best of Show is selected from the 12 first-place entries.
The judging took place at the 40th annual Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers Show and Sale on March 11 in
Strongsville.
“The competition is tough and I am very proud of my students,” said Lloyd Triggs, Bowling Green High
School art instructor. “I have a small group that are devoted to this project. It is great to see their
hard work rewarded.”
This was the fourth year students of Triggs have competed in the show. Previously, two of his students
went on to compete and win in the Ward World Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland.
