Clinics on Tai Chi, avoiding falls offered at Heartland

PERRYSBURG —  Statistics show an older Ohio resident falls every minute, resulting in an injury every
five minutes, an emergency room visit every six minutes, a hospitalization each hour and three deaths
each day
In response to this news, the Ohio Department of Aging created a program called Steady U, a fall
prevention initiative to keep Ohioans safer.
In response to this initiative, Heartland of Perrysburg is offering free Tai Chi classes and balance and
fall prevention clinics from March through October.
The first Tai Chi class is at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Heartland of Perrysburg’s MedBridge Therapy Gym, and the
class will be hosted by Wendy Maran. The first balance and fall prevention clinic will be hosted by
Heartland’s therapy team on March 23 at 5 p.m.
“Steady U Ohio is a statewide collaborative falls prevention initiative, supported by Ohio government and
state business partners to ensure that every county, every community and every Ohioan knows how they can
prevent falls, one step at a time” said Vaishali Pathak, director of rehab at Heartland.
“We are thrilled to partner with the state of Ohio and do our civil duty to protect local citizens from
preventable falls.”
