Farm to Fair: Part two

0

Far from the image of “Mary had a little lamb,” raising lambs for the Wood County fair involves work and
dedication.
Liz Hirzel’s two lambs, Paul and Toby, are designated as market lambs to be sold as the 2015 Wood County
Fair closes this August. She has been showing and selling lambs for several years.
Hirzel said she and most exhibitors have more than one lamb, as “it is good for them to have a friend to
be with in the barn.”
This year’s lambs were born in mid-January and arrived to their barn in early April. They are housed in a
separate area of the barn from her market steer, Brody. The Hirzel home does not have a barn at their
Sugar Ridge Road home, so her animals are being raised at her aunt and uncle’s farm, Heidi and Rick
Kopec, near New Rochester. (Video by J.D. Poole/Sentinel-Tribune)
