Ohio veterans memorial delayed as demolition work extended

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Officials say the demolition of a central Ohio veterans memorial will take months
longer than expected, delaying the construction of a statewide memorial planned for the site.
The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1KmTOZ2 ) officials have discovered that the foundation of
Franklin County Veterans Memorial supports parts of a miles-long floodwall that protects from potential
Scioto River flooding. County commissioners were asked Thursday to extend contracts for post-demolition
work.
Officials say the demolition, which was expected to be finished by April, will now take several more
months.
The additional underground work is expected to cost $2.8 million, bringing the project’s total to about
$4.8 million.
Following the demolition, the county will turn the site over to the Columbus Downtown Development
Corporation, which is overseeing the new $55 million statewide memorial and museum.
