WHITEHOUSE — Perrysburg’s girls used a strong first quarter to secure a 45-31 Northern Lakes League win
on the road over Anthony Wayne on Friday.
Perrysburg jumped out to a 12-0 lead to begin the game, scored 17 of the game’s first 19 points and took
a 20-4 lead through the first eight minutes.
During the opening run, Kayla Piezer scored all seven of her points in the game. Overall, Piezer and her
teammates shot 8-for-15 in the opening stanza.
“That was one of our better first quarters this season,” said Perrysburg head coach Todd Sims. “Then, the
second, third and fourth quarters was kind of a grinder.”
In the second quarter, Anthony Wayne picked it up defensively and forced four of Perrysburg’s five
first-half turnovers. It also shot 3-for-3 from long range and held Perrysburg to four points on
2-for-10 shooting to trim its deficit to nine at the break.
“I liked our defense except for those threes in the second quarter,” Sims said. “Other than that, we did
pretty well.”
Perrysburg, however, matched its second-quarter point total in the first 24 seconds of the third quarter
on layups from Lindy DeLong and Taylin Hunter. The run didn’t stop as Perrysburg scored the first eight
points of the quarter to open up a 32-15 lead with 5:31 left.
Perrysburg’s Allex Brown, who had nine points and 10 rebounds, capped the run with a pair of free throws.
Anthony Wayne responded with a 7-2 run, but Macy Tudor ripped the ball from Anthony Wayne’s Ashley
Mitchell with 15 seconds left in the quarter, which led to a layup from Hunter just before the buzzer to
give Perrysburg a 14-point lead through three.
“Sometimes you have to grind them out on the road, and that’s what we did,” Sims said.
Similar to the third quarter, Perrysburg opened the final frame in a strong way by scoring the first six
points to increase its lead to 20 with 4:50 left in the game. Anthony Wayne closed the game on a 9-3
run.
No players scored in double figures in the game.
For Perrysburg (6-4 overall, 4-2 NLL), three players had nine points each, including Brown, DeLong and
Hunter.
Perrysburg prevailed in the junior varsity game, 38-25. Hailey Wenzelman had 11 points and Cameron Clark
added 10 for Perrysburg.
