JERRY CITY — Elmwood’s girls basketball team remains atop the Northern Buckeye Conference
standings following a 57-47 win over Genoa, another of the league’s top teams, on Thursday. The Royals, after
trailing 26-25 with five minutes left to play in the third quarter, went on an 11-0 run and maintained the
lead for good.“I think that’s a sign of a good team when you can stop a run and get on another run. That is
what I was most impressed with tonight,” said Elmwood coach Doug Reynolds“Genoa is a good team. They were
picked to win the league,” he added.Elmwood had three players in double figures: Kristen Curtis (16 points,
nine rebounds); Marissa Swavel (13 points) and Madison Sears (10 points). Tiffany Hillard also added 10
rebounds, including seven in the fourth quarter, and four points.Elmwood is now 5-3 overall and 5-0 in the
NBC. Rossford is second at 4-1 after a win over Lake on Thursday.Genoa dropped to 5-3, 3-2. Ciara Albright
led the Comets with 21 points and 10 rebounds.Elmwood took a 25-19 lead into the half, after leading by as
many as 14 in the second quarter, but Genoa came out strong in the second half to take over the lead.Swavel
led the double-digit charge with a 3-pointer, which was followed by five points in a row from Sears and
three free throws by Curtis.Curtis was 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.“We clamped down on defense, and I
think that was the key,” Reynolds said of the third-quarter run.Elmwood was also aided by strong bench play
from Sears, a sophomore.“Madison Sears gave us a big lift. She hit shots and she played great defense. And
she is just a sophomore. That’s the best part,” Reynolds said.Swavel, a senior point guard, also played a
key role offensively with four 3-pointers.“Marissa Swavel hasn’t taken many shots up until this game, but
she stepped up and knocked down some key shots for us,” Reynolds said.Reynolds also commended Hillard for
making an impact with her rebounding.“That’s huge for us when she steps up and controls the boards,” he
said.Elmwood also won the junior varsity game 40-20. Jaela Kynard had 18 points for Elmwood.Elmwood 57,
