MILLBURY – Using new software, Lake School District administrators expect to collect up to
$150,000 a year from Medicaid. At its Nov. 20 meeting, the board of education approved a service
agreement with MSB Consulting Group for its software, called Waypoynt. The contract is from Nov. 6
through Nov. 5, 2016.The software will be used to identify services that Lake staff provides that could
be reimbursed. They include audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapy and some
transportation."They estimate they will be able to … get us reimbursed for $140,000 to $150,000 a
year," said Superintendent Jim Witt.MSB will take a 7 percent fee from what it recoups, Witt
said. Also at the meeting, the board modified a recommendation from the co-curricular committee to create
a high school/middle school drama club adviser for $972.The board instead voted to keep the position as
non-paid for this school year.At last month’s board meeting, dozens of students, parents and staff
protested the decision to not fund the adviser position for $972.After an executive session, the board
said it would allow the club to run this year, again with a volunteer adviser. Board President Tim Krugh
said if the drama club continues to demonstrate that it is viable, the board will take a serious look at
funding the adviser position in 2014-15.At this meeting, he added that the board is reluctant to fund
new positions because it cut 43 positions last year, on the heels of two levy failures. New millage was
passed later in 2012, but the board has been hesitant to restore the positions and programs, such as
all-day everyday kindergarten."And we didn’t feel it was appropriate to have this (drama club
adviser funding) when the others haven’t been restored," Krugh said. Also at the meeting, the
board:• Authorized Treasurer Jeff Carpenter to arrange a short-term tax anticipation loan with the State
Bank and Trust Co. for $500,000. The board did this last year, too, to cover a funding gap that usually
occurs in January. Carpenter said the loan is paid back in February when tax receipts start coming into
the district.• Created an Athletic Uniform Fund to be used for an annual donation from the Athletic
Boosters.• Accepted donations from Martin Snyder, records of 1954 and 1959 band and chorus; Richard
Welling, books in memory of Ruth Welling; the State Bank, pens and pencils; Deb and Tom Herman, books,
and Pat Ayling, golf VHS tapes.
