King’s DaughtersSeventeen members and one guest were present for the Oct. 21 meeting of the
International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons held at First United Methodist Church.Hostesses Jane
Milbrodt and Bonnie Woods served refreshments from a table featuring fall decorations.Following devotions
presented by Bonnie Woods, Kate Summerfeld, director of United Way in Wood County, spoke. She asked the
group what the most urgent need is in Wood County and transportation, medical assistance, housing were all
suggested but the answer was food. United Way is part of the Food Pantry Network which is aware of where
people in need can go to get food. United Way was the fiscal sponsor of BG’s recent Project Homeless Connect
day, joined by many partner agencies and volunteers. Food was available all day and groceries were sent home
with participants.United Way strives to help people with their basic needs – food, clothing and shelter –
but also to help with education, health and even tax preparation. Funds contributed to United Way by
residents of Wood County effectively stay in the county.Emmy Hann, president, presided at the business
meeting. Program books for the new year were distributed and changes noted.Coupon books from a local store
will be sold as a fund raiser and Nov. 7 and 9 are dates when members can help.A report of the recent
convention held in Bowling Green was given. Members received pearls for meeting the Standard of Excellence
qualifications during the past year. Marvalene Ricard received a Silver Cross Pin for her service as
convention registrar.The next meeting will be held Nov. 18.
