Cameron Black is looking forward to finishing his Bowling Green career on a high note.The
6-foot-10 Black is one of two seniors on the Falcons’ men’s basketball team this season.The Falcons played a
30-minute intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, and Black scored 16 points.‘‘I’ve been a role player the last three
years. This year I’m trying to be some kind of impact player,’’ Black said. ‘‘I’m feeling stronger; I weigh
more; I’m healthier this year.’’The scrimmage was divided into three 10-minute periods with the Brown team
featuring the veterans and the Orange team filled with younger players and newcomers.Currently the Falcons
have a 12-man roster, but senior Craig Sealey and freshman Zach Denny did not participate in the scrimmage.
Walk-ons Josh Jones, a 5-11 sophomore from Bellefontaine, and Brandon Busuttil, a 6-4 guard from Kitchener,
Ontario, are also working out with the team. If both are added to the roster, BG will have 14 players.The
Brown team won each 10-minute period, with the third period being the closest at 22-18. Brown scored 62
points overall. In addition to Black’s 16 points, including eight in the final 10 minutes, Jehvon Clarke was
the leading scorer in the scrimmage with 18 points, and Richaun Holmes added 12. Holmes had the highlight
play of the scrimmage with a steal near half-court that ended in a reverse slam dunk.Spencer Parker had 16
of the 36 points scored by the Orange team.‘‘We had good pace, we weren’t sloppy, and nobody got hurt,’’ BG
head coach Louis Orr said. ‘‘For our young guys, it was a good experience and they are going to get better
over time.‘‘All in all it was a good day, and I was pleased,’’ he continued. ‘‘There were a lot of good
things out there, and we were doing some different things offensively.’’Black said the early season practice
sessions have gone well.‘‘Everybody has been running plays better; we are getting in better shape every day.
We work hard in every drill,’’ he said. ‘‘You can see the talent increase overall for our whole team.‘‘We’re
concentrating on skill development … we’re looking to execute better.’’Orr said the key to the preseason
practices is to get better every day.‘‘I just want to be comfortable with where we are with more quality
than quantity,’’ Orr said. ‘‘You rush through stuff sometimes just to say you cover things, but you never do
anything well.‘‘My thing is to just keeping building,’’ he continued. ‘‘I’m happy with most of the areas
that we have concentrated on, especially with our veteran guys.’’Orr hopes the younger players can improve
on their defensive efforts.‘‘That’s the part that has to make the most growth between now and our exhibition
game,’’ Orr said about the defense.The Falcons host Malone in an exhibition game on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., and
open the regular season on Nov. 9 at home against Earlham starting at 2 p.m.
