BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Paul Senn made his place in Bowling Green State University football
history Saturday at Indiana.A junior college transfer from Riverside (Calif.) Community College, Senn is
in his first season with the Falcons. He is a linebacker and special teams performer.In the opening
quarter, the Falcons put on the punt block and Senn was able to grab the ball in mid-kick off the foot
of IU’s Erich Toth.“I wasn’t actually designed to block the punt. … I saw a chance and I took it,’’
said Senn. “Right when I blocked it, I felt it in my hands, and I just kept running.’’Senn was credited
with a 56-yard return on the blocked punt.Senn said IU showed a different formation than the Falcons
expected.‘‘We got something a little different, scheme-wise,’’ Senn said,“We needed big plays against a
Big Ten team, and that’s what I was trying to do.”It was the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown
by the Falcons, since Marcus Allen against Central Michigan in 2002.‘‘We had a good block thing schemed
up, and we felt really good we could block one this week,’’ BG head coach Dave Clawson said.JOHNSON: In
his second career start, Matt Johnson had his problems against Indiana. The redshirt sophomore
quarterback was 25-of-44 for 248 yards with one interception and no touchdowns.‘‘I made some decent
throws. I also missed some wide-open throws,’’ Johnson said, adding that he was ‘average’ in the game.
‘‘I threw the deep ball pretty poorly.‘‘Overall I don’t think it was that bad that it hurt us, but I
definitely didn’t help us either.’’After taking a hard hit on a sack by Ryan Phillis in the fourth
quarter, Johnson was replaced by Matt Schilz.JOPLIN: Fifth-year senior Shaun Joplin had his second
straight game with more than 100 yards receiving for the Falcons.Joplin finished with 104 yards on seven
receptions against IU after having 113 yards on six receptions the previous week.This season he has 15
receptions for 257 yards.TATE: After starting the season 4-of-4 on field goals, BG’s Tyler Tate was
1-of-3 against IU.The redshirt sophomore made a 45-yarder, but missed from 47 and 33 yards.QUICK:
Indiana’s quick-tempo offense was effective.On their six scoring drives, the Hoosiers used a total of 35
plays, covering 396 yards, while taking 12:04 off the clockINJURIES: Gabe Martin, the Falcons’ leading
tackler last season, suffered a leg injury in the first half and did not return.Charlie Walker took part
in warmups before the game, but the redshirt junior defensive end did not play.Freshman running back
Fred Coppet suffered an apparent hip injury late in the game and had to be helped off the field.NEXT:
