The quarterback question will be answered Tuesday.Fifth-year senior Matt Schilz and redshirt
sophomore Matt Johnson have been battling through fall camp for the starting quarterback job for the Bowling
Green State University Falcons.Dave Clawson, in his fifth season as BG’s head coach, said after Sunday’s
scrimmage that the decision would be announced Tuesday. The Falcons open the regular season on Aug. 29 at
home against Tulsa.‘‘We’ll watch the film and evaluate it, (then) we’ll make a decision,’’ Clawson
said.Offensive coordinator Warren Ruggiero will also have input in the decision. The Falcons ran a total of
25 series during Sunday’s scrimmage with Johnson getting eight series and Schilz seven, with both running
the No. 1 and No. 2 offenses during drills. James Knapke got seven series, mostly late in the scrimmage, and
Austin Valdez got three at the end.In the scrimmage, Johnson led five scoring drives and Schilz led four
scoring drives.Johnson hit Herve Colby with a 10-yard pass that Colby bobbled and while laying on the ground
caught the ball for the score. The drive was helped by two defensive penalties.Johnson also threw a 10-yard
scoring pass to Marcus Levy and a 6-yarder to Chris Gallon. On the Gallon TD drive, Travis Greene had a
32-yard run and Gallon made a 27-yard reception.Tyler Tate kicked a field goal, and William Houston scored
on a 2-yard run with Johnson at quarterback. With Schilz at quarterback, the Falcons scored on two running
plays and two field goals. On Schilz’s second series, he connected with Gallon for a 35-yard gain. He then
ran for 14 yards setting up a 1-yard TD run by Andre Givens. There was a defensive penalty that helped keep
the drive alive. The other touchdown drive for Schilz, included a 27-yard pass to Jared Cohen and a 23-yard
run by Jamel Martin, with Houston scoring on a 2-yard run.Chris Gallon, BG’s leading receiver last season,
called the competition dead-even.‘‘Schilz, he has been in the position for us, so he knows how to play and
handle game-pressure,’’ Gallon said. ‘‘I believe Matty J (Johnson) has the confidence to do so too. He’s a
smart kid just like Schilz.‘‘I think the best thing is that we should play them both, that would just make
it fair,’’ Gallon continued. ‘‘To me it could be either.’’
