Committee sets agenda to address east siders

Several recommendations have been adopted
by the Community Improvement Committee of Bowling Green City Council to address concerns of east side
residents.Committee members indicated these ideas would not require any council action and likely little
expenditure of city funds. The CIC also decided not to hold any further meetings on east side issues
until after an Aug. 20 trip to Oxford, home of Miami University, to study related issues and historical
preservation efforts. At the top of the recommendation list are:• Establishment of an ongoing
neighborhood cleanup campaign that would involve Bowling Green State University students with the help
of the Undergraduate Student Government and the East Side Neighborhood Association.• A voluntary renter
orientation program. Landlords would be encouraged to provide this orientation and tenants encouraged to
attend. First Ward Council Member Daniel Gordon said college communities in Canada and England have
established such programs.• Hiring of student interns. The CIC asked administrators to canvas city
departments to identify needs.Other ideas include establishment of a town-gown commission, which may
require legislation, establishment of a committee to work on a city effort to become a Certified Local
Government in the Ohio Historical Society’s Preservation program, additional green space, creation of
neighborhood preservation zones, rental licensing and inspections, fostering home ownership, especially
among new faculty and staff members.
