Land trust trying to buy Michigan’s Hungarian Gorge area

HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) — A small conservancy in the westernUpper Peninsula wants to establish a
nature area in a section ofHoughton County known as the Hungarian gorge.The Keweenaw LandTrust is trying to
raise $40,000 this month to cover up-front costs ofbuying a 10-acre parcel. It includes a waterfall, a
historic dam, asmall pond and hiking trails that have been open to the public foryears. The trails link up
with others on state land.The TorchLake Area Fire Protection Authority is selling the parcel because it
nolonger needs the pond to provide water for its trucks and repairing thedam is expensive.Land trust
director Evan McDonald says many in the community fear losing access to the property if another buyer gets
