BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Bowling Green’s hockey team played well during large parts of Saturday
night’s game at Ferris State.Unfortunately for the Falcons, their special teams were a minus-2 and they
gave up three breakaway goals during a 4-3 loss in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.Garrett
Thompson’s power-play goal with 3:32 left in the second period snapped a 3-3 tie and Ferris held on to

SCORESThe Bulldogs’ scored their first three goals on breakaways, including
Kyle Bonis’ short-handed goal with 52 seconds left in the first period to break a 1-1 tie.The Falcons
were 0-of-3 on the power play, while Ferris scored on its only chance with the extra man.BG finished the
game with a 29-20 edge in shots, including a 23-11 margin over the final 40 minutes.The Falcons are last
in the CCHA in power-play conversions (12.1 percent) and next-to-last in penalty-killing (78.7 percent),
and are a minus-17 in special teams goals this season.“Special teams cost us the game,” BG coach Chris
Bergeron said. “You’re hoping they have a positive impact on the game, but tonight they had a negative
impact.”The Falcons were seeking a sweep of the series after posting a 2-1 overtime win Friday on a
night they were out-shot by a 37-32 margin.“We played better tonight than we did last night,” Bergeron
said. “There was more of a purpose to what we doing, but we didn’t make enough plays. Our margin for
error is so small and this game is clear-cut example of that.“I’m happy with the way we played for the
most part, but I’m not happy with the result.”Thompson put Ferris, which never tailed, ahead for good
after BG had scored twice in a 35-second span to erase a 3-1 deficit earlier in the period.Brent Tate
brought BG within 3-2 at 8:35 and Brett Mohler tied the game at 9:10.“We showed our resiliency,”
Bergeron said.Adam Berkle scored BG’s other goal, his first goal since Jan. 8, a span of 10 games.C.J.
Motte had 26 saves for Ferris. BG’s Tommy Burke stopped 16 shots in his fourth straight start in place
of the injured Andrew Hammond.Alaska is sixth with 37 points, followed by seventh-place Lake Superior
(32) and BG (31). The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-place teams host first-round playoff teams.Northern
Michigan (26), Michigan (25) and Michigan State (22) round out the 11-team league.BG hosts NMU this
weekend. The Falcons, Lake Superior, NMU, Michigan and MSU each had four games left, and Alaska has two.
