College Scene: Three from county win NCAA football title at Mount Union (01-04-13)

[email protected].)Mac Knisely, from Perrysburg High School, Shannon Stewart, from Elmwood High
School, and Corey Jones, from Northwood High School, were all members of the Mount Union football team which
won the NCAA Division III national championship.Knisely was the starting center for Mount Union and Stewart
was the tight end. Stewart had one reception for seven yards in the title game, while playing on an injured
knee.Jones was a sophomore defensive end.Knisely and Stewart, both seniors, earned first-team All-Ohio
Athletic Conference honors.Jamie Akenberger, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior on the Florida Gulf
Coast University women’s swimming and diving team.She scored in the 500 freestyle (5:11.57), the 1,650
freestyle (18:10.51) and the 200 backstroke (2:10.14) in the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational.Mitchell
Auchmuty, from Elmwood High School, is a junior thrower on the Capital University men’s indoor track and
field team.Derek Batt, from Bowling Green High School, was a redshirt freshman linebacker on the University
of Toledo football team.Baley Bernthisel, from Otsego High School, was a junior on the Ashland University
volleyball team.Bernthisel finished the season with 245 kills, 59 digs, 53 blocks, and 12 aces for the
Eagles, who were 24-9.Justin Bockbrader, from Eastwood High School, is a member of the Bowling Green State
University club hockey team.Jordan Breitigam, from Bowling Green High School, is a junior on the Ohio
Northern men’s swimming and diving team.He was the Ohio Athletic Conference swimmer of the week for his
efforts in the Wooster Invitational. Breitigam posted a time of 49.57 in the 100 butterfly which broke a
school record and bettered the NCAA "B" Cut. Breitigam was second in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.37.
He was also part of the winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams.Xavier Brown, from Bowling Green High School,
is a junior on the College of Wooster men’s basketball team.Through the first 12 games of the year, Brown is
averaging a team-high 15.9 points along with 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He is averaging 31.8
minutes per game.Brian Bushong, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the Ohio Northern men’s
swimming and diving team.Against Findlay and Defiance, Bushong was third in the 400 individual medley
(4:41.25) and was fourth in the 200 breast stroke (2:33.30).Michael Cavanaugh, from Otsego High School, is a
junior on the Miami (Ohio) University men’s swimming team.In the five-team Miami Invitational, Cavanaugh
scored in the 100 butterfly, was a member of the 200 medley relay team which finished fourth, and the 400
freestyle relay team which was sixth.Rick Diechert, from Perrysburg, is a freshman on the Ohio Northern
men’s basketball team. He attended Maumee Valley Country Day.He has seen action in four of ONU’s first 11
games.Ashley Dunn, from Bowling Green High School, was a junior on the BGSU volleyball team.She had 568 digs
this season, which was third on the single-season career list. She is third all-time with 1,475 career
digs.Dunn also had 114 assists and 27 aces this fall as BG advanced to the second-round of the NCAA
tournament.Jordan Dunn, from Bowling Green High School, was a junior on the Northwood (Mich.) University
volleyball team.Dunn played in all 32 matches for the Timberwolves and had 1,123 of the team’s 1,509
assists. Dunn also had 40 kills, 26 aces and 18 blocks.Northwood finished 26-7.Jason Faykosh, from Eastwood
High School, is a junior on the Ohio Northern men’s basketball team.Through the first 11 games of the
season, Faykosh has 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.Rachel Flores, from North Baltimore High
School, is a freshman on the women’s basketball team at Lourdes University.Through the first 15 games of the
season, Flores is averaging 1.5 points per game.Cameron Gardner, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on
the University of Cincinnati indoor women’s track and field team.She was second in the 60 (7.80) and 200
(25.45) at the SPIRE Institute Collegiate Season Opener.Patrick Graham, from Bowling Green High School, is a
senior on the Christian Brothers University men’s basketball team.Graham has started CBU’s first nine games
this season and is averaging 9.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He’s second on the team with 22
3-pointers.Jimmy Grandowicz, from Rossford High School, is a member of the Bowling Green State University
club hockey team.Liz Hammer, from Bowling Green High School, is a redshirt junior on the Ursuline College
women’s basketball team.She sat out the 2011-12 season and the start of this season with an injury. Hammer
has played in four or Ursuline’s 12 games.Abby Harris, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the
Harvard University women’s hockey team.A defenseman, Harris has played in all 11 games for Harvard and has
one assist with plus-3 rating.Harvard, 11-1-1, is ranked fourth in the nation.Amanda Hotaling, from North
Baltimore High School, is a freshman on the University of Cincinnati women’s indoor track and field team.She
cleared 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault at the SPIRE Institute Collegiate Season Opener, finishing second.Charlie
Hughes, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the University of Chicago men’s basketball team.He has
started nine of the first 11 games this season and played 269 minutes, the third-most on the team. He is
averaging 7.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.Andrew Johnson, from Otsego High School, is a senior on the
Heidelberg University wrestling team.Johnson (149) was sixth at the Ohio Northern Open and went 2-2 at the
Florida Gulf Cost Duals.Hunter Johnson, from Lake High School, is a freshman sprinter on Trine University’s
indoor track and field team.Johnson was a member of the winning 800 relay team at the Tiffin University
Alumni Grand Opener.Alyssa Kopp, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman thrower on the indoor track
team and field team at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.She threw 11.15 meters in the weight throw and 11.63 meters
in the shot put at the Mastadon Opener.Zack Leahy, from Rossford High School, is a junior on the Wittenberg
University men’s basketball team.Leahy has started all 11 of the Tigers’ games this season and is averaging
12.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He leads the team with 15 steals and is second with 27 assists.Jay
Marquette, a Rossford resident, is a sophomore men’s basketball player at Owens Community College. Through
14 games, Marquette is averaging 3.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. He also has 19 assists and 13
steals.Ali Mass, a resident of Walbridge, was a junior on the Lourdes University volleyball team this
fall.She has been named a 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete by the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics.Mass is a nursing major carrying a 3.66 grade-point-average.Kelsea Newman, from
Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the women’s basketball team at Youngstown State University.Katie
Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a junior sprinter on Kent State University indoor women’s track and
field team.Reiser was fifth (25.64) in the 200 at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.Stephanie Richards, a
senior at Perrysburg High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend Lourdes University and play
volleyball."We are happy we have been able to sign Steph," said Lourdes head coach Greg Reitz
stated. "She is a very complete player and will compete as an outside hitter for us. She is really
excited to come here and we are equally as excited to have her."Richards was a two-time first-team
All-Northern Lakes League selection at Perrysburg. She was also a first-team Sentinel-Tribune All-County
pick as a junior.She intends on majoring in nursing at Lourdes.Clay Rolf, from Eastwood High School, was a
redshirt sophomore on the Bowling Green State University football team.Cody Seifert, from Eastwood High
School, is a junior sprinter on the Kent State University men’s indoor track and field team.Kyle Smithey,
from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the University of Findlay indoor men’s track and field team.Jamie
Sobczak, a Perrysburg resident, is a freshman on the women’s basketball team at Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit
University. She attended Toledo Central Catholic.Through the first eight games of the season she is second
on the team averaging 13.6 points a game.Jenna Stoner, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the
women’s basketball team at DePauw University.Stoner has played in eight of 11 games and is averaging 2.0
points per game.Kelly Titus, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior on the Ohio State University
swimming team.In the OSU Invitational, Titus was eighth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:32.15).Nick Twining, from
Eastwood High School, is a sophomore on the Eastern Michigan University men’s indoor track and field
team.Justin Welch, from Eastwood High School, is a junior thrower on the University of Findlay track and
field team.Competing unattached, Welch won the weight throw (71-8 1/14) at Oiler Open.Matt White, from
Perrysburg High School, is a member of the Bowling Green State University club hockey team.White is the
team’s second-leading scorer with 26 points. He has 12 goals and 14 assists. The team’s record is 14-3-1.
