Depth could be key for Perrysburg boys (11-16-12)

PERRYSBURG — For Perrysburg’s boys basketball team, something that has been lacking in recent years could
help the Yellow Jackets in the 2012-13 season.
Depth will be key if Perrysburg hopes to make a run at the Northern Lakes League championship.
“We’re deeper than we’ve been in a number of years,” said Perrysburg head coach Dave Boyce, who is in his
13th season. “We have decent overall size and with Shane (Edwards) we have a real threat to score at any
time.”
Perrysburg returns three starters and five letter winners from a year ago, when the team went 14-8
overall and finished second in the NLL at 11-3.
“What we’ve got to show is consistency,” Boyce said. “We’ve got to show consistency in scoring and we’ve
got to show the ability to finish. And let’s face it, the schedule is as good as it’s been.”
In addition to the competition the NLL poses, Perrysburg will square off against nonleague opponents
Toledo St. Francis, Dublin Coffman, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Sandusky Perkins, Toledo Waite, Toledo
Start, Toledo Whitmer and Ottawa-Glandorf.
“It makes your tougher, it makes you more seasoned,” Boyce said of the nonleague schedule. “The fear is
that it beats you down. It’s no fun coming close. We believe we have the ability to beat those teams.”

Edwards (6-foot 3), Bryant Byrd (6-2) and Nate Patterson (6-4) are Perrysburg’s returning starters, with
Hayden Thomas (5-11) and Nick Moschetti (6-2) also are coming back after earning letters last season.

Boyce said Quinn Thomas (5-9), Matt Mesker (5-10), Chris Schimmoeller (6-1) and Mason Cajka (6-5) will
provide solid minutes off the bench.
Matt Kaczinksi (6-5) is expected to be the fifth starter with Schimmoeller also competing for the spot.

“Shane can score in a variety of ways and that’s what makes him tough to stop,” Boyce said. “Nick
Moschetti, in addition, has the ability to score from outside and off the drive. And Nate Patterson is a
reliable inside scorer.”
Perrysburg will have to replace two of what can arguably be described as its biggest threats last season
in Jake Pfleghaar and Scott Milne, both of whom graduated.
“The main thing they gave us was athleticism,” Boyce said of Pfleghaar and Milne. “Those two are going to
be tough to replace … But it’s a new team, it’s a different team.”
The ’Jackets’ biggest concern will be its post defense, and Boyce sees that as the team’s area for the
most improvement.
“We have to be able to guard the paint,” Boyce said. “We’re going to see a number of prolific big men
this year. You have to be able to guard the paint and you have to be able to do it without putting teams
on the foul line.”
