BRYAN – By combining a record-setting performance from Kassie Memmer and a stout defensive effort,
Bowling Green High School’s girls soccer team advanced to the Division II district final.
BG posted a 3-1 win over Napoleon Monday afternoon in the district semifinal.
The Bobcats, 9-8-1 overall, face the Toledo St. Ursula-Maumee winner Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lake Community
Stadium. The St. Ursula-Maumee match is Wednesday.
Memmer, a junior, scored two goals in the match and has 20 this season, besting the previous
single-season mark of 18 set by Heidi Huber, The two goals were also the 46th and 47th of Memmer’s
career as she passed Huber’s total of 46 career goals.
"I’m really excited about it,” said Memmer about the scoring-records.
Memmer has been hampered by two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in her high school career. She scored
15 goals while playing in only eight games as a sophomore.
"She’s an outstanding player. I have been watching her since she was 10- or 11-years-old,” Napoleon
head coach Mike Murphy said. "She has always been a dynamic player and is fun to watch.”
In the regular-season match between BG and Napoleon, the Bobcats posted a 1-0 win.
"We kept our heads in it (Monday). Last time we played, it was like we got a goal, now we can
relax," Memmer said. "This time, we knew we had to keep the pressure up and keep scoring
goals.”
Memmer got the Bobcats on the board less than four minutes into the match. After collecting the ball near
midfield, Memmer made a long run. got past her defender and then beat goalie Kayla Gerken with a shot to
the far post.
"She was hungry right off the bat," BG head coach Erin Webb said about Memmer. ”It was
definitely a hard-earned goal. You could tell she was going to go after it tonight.
"The whole team was behind her, supporting her. That’s just the way it’s been all year.”
About 12 minutes later, BG goalie Josie Benson came off her line and got her whole body in front of a
shot by Napoleon’s Jessie Perez to maintain BG’s 1-0 lead.

Bowling Green’s Kaleigh
Strausbaugh (14) heads the ball during Monday’s match against Napoleon.

"Our defense is extremely strong," Memmer said. "Josie is amazing in goal. She didn’t
start our playing as a goalie. She just came out her senior year and we needed a keeper and she stepped
up and did it for us.”
Ten minutes after Benson’s save, Gerken came too far out of her net in an effort to clean the ball and
Memmer was able to control the ball and shoot it into the open net.
Perez had two more chances in the first half, but shot the ball wide with 10:40 left in the half and then
hit the left post with 5:20 remaining. BG’s Brittany Lowe had a shot on goal off a header, but Gerken
was there for the save.
In the second half, Livvy Dill started the play which led to BG’s third goal with a nice cross to
Priscilla Perez. Perez controlled the pass and got a shot off, but Gerken made the save. However, Lowe
was in the right spot to tap in the rebound with 20 minutes remaining to play.
Napoleon applied a great deal of pressure in the second half, but BG’s midfield, led by senior Erin
Kielmeyer, and the defensive back four were up to the task.
"Erin is incredible. She has totally taken over the whole midfield this year," Webb said.
"There was no way that she was ending her senior year (Monday). She fires people up … She’s
fighting for it and winning balls and everyone sees that.
"The defenders in the back, all year, have just been incredible. They are so hard to beat
one-on-one. Individually, they are all incredible defenders,” Webb continued, adding the back four back
support each other and play well as a unit.
The Wildcats finally scored with just under nine minutes remaining on a shot by Perez which eluded Benson
along the goal line.
