Flyers lose game, QB at Northview (9-9-12)

SYLVANIA — Lake’s football team lost a game and its star quarterback Saturday night.

Jared Rettig will be sidelined indefinitely, the result of a hard hit during a 45-26
loss at Northview.
The sophomore was hit at the goal line at the end of a 13-yard touchdown run that
gave Lake a 20-14 lead with 8:23 left in the second quarter.
Rettig — whose running and passing fuels Lake’s spread offense — didn’t return and
was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
When asked if Rettig had a concussion, Olwin said: “That was the indication from the
medical staff on the sideline.”
Olwin said Rettig would be out for “a while.”
Rettig completed 11-of-14 passes for 155 yards and two TDs and ran six times for 49
yards before he was injured.
“He was trying to make a play,” Olwin said. “He’s a competitive kid.”
After Rettig left the game, Northview scored twice in a 33-second span during the
final two minutes of the second quarter for a 28-20 lead at the half.
The Wildcats drove 53 yards in nine plays, capped by Kyle Kremchek’s 15-yard scoring
pass to Mark Bernsdorff with 1:38 left.
The key play on the drive came when Lake was offsides as Northview faced a
fourth-and-three play at its own 46, giving Northview a first down.
Following Bernsdorff’s TD, Northview kicked off short and Lake failed to cover the
kick.
Northview’s Preston McCurdy recovered at the Lake 30. He scored on an 11-yard run on
the second play to increase the Wilcats’ lead to 28-20. Kremchek gained seven
yards on the first play, but the Flyers were called for a late hit on the play,
moving the ball to the 11.
The Flyers were hurt by four turnovers (two fumbles, two interceptions) and seven
penalties for 62 yards.
Northview was penalized 16 times for 118 yards and had three turnovers.
Each had three first downs by penalty.
“Little mistakes add up to negative things instead of positive things” Olwin said.

Junior left-hander D’Angelo Smith replaced Rettig and completed 9-of-19 passes for
134 yards. He threw a 20-yard TD pass to Connor Bowen with 8:02 remaining to
bring Lake within 31-26, but Northview clinched the win with two TDs in the
final five minutes.
Northview ran its lead to 31-20 on Brandon O’Donnell’s 37-yard goal with 4:57 to play
in the third quarter.
“(Rettig’s loss) affects us from a timing aspect, more than anything else, and
D’Angelo hasn’t had as many reps,” Olwin said. “They trade reps during practice,
but (Smith) played hard and did some good things. His timing’s just not as sharp
as Jared’s and he doesn’t have the game experience Jared has.”
Lake, 1-2 overall, opens Northern Buckeye Conference play Friday when it hosts
Eastwood. Northview is 2-1.
“(Smith’s) come a long way in a short period of time since we our 7-on-7 passing,”
Olwin added. “I’m really proud of him. He has some skills and he has a live arm.
We’re going to have to create some things and do some things differently.”
The Flyers finished with 321 yards, while Northview totaled 462. Wildcat running
backs Bernsdorff and Corey Bowman combined for 261 yards rushing and four TDs.
Kremchek was 9-of-15 for 179 yards.
Despite the loss, Lake was vastly improved over a week ago when it dropped a 70-26
decision to Northwood. The Flyers rely heavily on sophomores and freshmen.
Despite poor field position and being on the field for a lot of the game, Lake’s
defense was respectable.
The Flyers never quit, even though were worn down on both sides of the ball.
“Our effort was good,” Olwin said. “We made mistakes, but they’re all correctable and
they’re not making the mistakes on purpose.”
