LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — A northeastern Ohio man has been
sentenced to 34 years in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed a
sheriff’s deputy’s wife and son.
Thirty-six-year-old Gerald
Wetherbee Jr. of Oberlin pleaded guilty earlier this month to aggravated
vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and operating a
vehicle under the influence. He was sentenced Friday.
The June
2011 crash happened west of Cleveland in Lorain County. State troopers
say a car driven by Wetherbee ran off the road and then swerved across
the center lane and struck the other vehicle head-on. They say
Wetherbee’s blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit and
he was driving with a suspended license.
Lorain County Sheriff’s
Cpl. Thomas Tomasheski and his 13-year-old daughter were injured in the
crash. The deputy’s wife and 11-year-old son were killed.
