Ohio prison recycling program expands to compost

LEBANON, Ohio (AP) — Officials at a prison in western Ohio
are expanding a program that saves the state thousands each year by
turning trash into recyclable goods.
Inmates at the Lebanon
Correctional Institution separate the prison’s solid trash into bags of
paper, plastic and aluminum that are sold to a recycling center. This
year, the prison is also collecting food waste, which is hauled away for
use in compost by a nearby organic landscaping and nursery company.
Warden
Tim Brunsman tells the Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/InPlUd) the
recycling initiative brought in about $13,000 last year while saving the
state an estimated $6,100 in trash-hauling costs.
He says the
landscaping company charges about one-third the price charged by a waste
disposal company to haul away the leftover food.
