90TH BIRTHDAY: Evelyn Wilkens

Evelyn (Buehrer) Wilkens of Bowling Green will observe her 90th birthday on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
She was born Feb. 1, 1922 in Archbold. Wilkens was a cheerleader and 1940 graduate of Troy High School in
Luckey. She also graduated in 1941 from the Cardi Beauty School in Columbus, then settling in Bowling
Green. She owned and operated a beauty salon with the late Monty Sader.
She married Richard Wilkens in 1946; he died in 1989. She has a daughter, Kathie Wilkens, Strongsville,
and one grandson, Benjamin.
She served on the board of deacons of First Presbyterian Church, and worked in the Deacon’s Shop from
1972 to 2010. Wilkens is also a former volunteer with the Wood County Hospital Guild, Brownie and Girl
Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and volunteer at the Kenwood Elementary library. She was a ward
chairman for the March of Dimes and a top seller of daffodils for the Wood County Chapter of the
American Cancer Society.
The Bowling Green Women’s Bowling Association admitted Wilkens into their Hall of Fame, giving her a
Lifetime Award in 1998. In 2003 she was named to the inaugural class of the Flower Basket Ladies Major
League Hall of Fame.
