Ohio wants $266,000 back from shut charter school

CLEVELAND (AP) — An audit in Ohio says a now-defunct charter school must repay the state $266,000 in
unaccounted-for spending.
The
audit of Cleveland’s Weems School, which closed in 2009, found little
documentation on how money was spent. State Auditor Dave Yost says
school leaders must return the money.
School founder Ruby Weems
calls the findings "horrible" but says she was unaware of the audit
until notified by The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/v7gMqY ).
Weems
says she had the required documentation but it went to a consultant
which handled finances. The consultant denies it has the paperwork and
says it closed the school after reviewing the situation.
A woman answering a phone listed in Weems’ name said Tuesday that Weems wasn’t there and couldn’t be
contacted.
