Bowling Green’s hockey team made sure another series sweep didn’t slip away Saturday night.

of the non-league series in the Ice Arena. PHOTO GALLERY
Ryan Viselli,
Cameron Sinclair and Ryan Carpenter scored for BG, and Adam Berkle and Cam Wojtala each added two
assists.
BG held a 34-12 edge in shots, but needed goals 60 seconds apart from Viselli and Sinclair to break a 1-1
tie late in the second period.
The Falcons, who were 4-1 winners Friday, improved to 6-5-1 overall after entering the series on a
five-game losing streak. Canisius is 2-5-1.
“All in all, I’m pleased,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said. “For the most part, it was a pretty well
executed game.”
BG had played well in winning series openers against Connecticut and Lake Superior last month, only to
play poorly in Game 2 of the series. The result was a tie against UConn and a loss to Lake Superior.
And in BG’s only sweep this season, it didn’t play well overall against Alabama-Huntsville.
The Falcons came out strong in the first period, building a 1-0 lead and out-shooting Canisius, 13-3. The
goal came at 10:28 when Rusty Hafner’s shot from the left point deflected in off Carpenter.
“We were focusing today on some lessons we learned,” Bergeron said, referring to the UConn and Lake
Superior series. “We wanted to get off to a good start. I felt the first period was good, even though it
was only 1-0. The shots were pretty one-sided and the opportunities were one-sided, so I was happy with
our first period. The way we started the game, I felt good about our chances.”
“We wanted to win each period,” Berkle said. “We wanted to win the first period and keep going from
there.”
Canisius briefly tied the game on Taylor Law’s rebound goal at 16:38 of the second period, but Viselli’s
power-play goal gave BG a 2-1 lead 63 seconds later and Sinclair added an insurance goal at 18:41.
Viselli scored from the left side of the crease on the rebound of Wojtala’s shot, while Sinclair’s goal
from the right side finished a nice three-way play with Berkle and Wojtala.
“It’s nice to answer (the Canisius goal),” Bergeron said. “Those were two huge goals.”
“We just knew we had to come back out and play twice as hard,” Berkle said.
The Falcons played much of the game in their offensive zone, thanks to effective forechecking.
BG also received a boost from the return of forwards Brett Mohler and Bobby Shea, who sat out Friday
because of fighting penalties last weekend against Ferris State.
Mohler is one of BG’s best offensive players, while Shea provides energy and a physical presence on the
fourth line. Shea, Andrew Wallace and James McIntosh played a solid game, combining for four shots and
no goals against.
“We went hard for 60 minutes,” Berkle said. “We didn’t take a period off, pretty much took it to them the
entire time. We put pucks on net, grinding it out the whole weekend.”
Andrew Hammond made 11 saves for the Falcons, who were 1-of-3 on the power play and killed off all four
of Canisius’ chances with the extra man.
The Falcons finish the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with Central Collegiate Hockey Association
series against Miami, Alaska, Michigan State and fifth-ranked Western Michigan. BG is 1-5 in the league.

“We can take away a little bit of confidence from this weekend,” Bergeron said. “When we do things well,
we can win. I still feel like there are plays to be made out there, offensively or defensively that we
continue to harp on because we need to be on the positive side of those. Starting next Friday, we’re
going to be playing teams that will take advantage of that. Teams in our league have shown it. We want
to limit those plays that are costing us in league play.”
