Women pioneers on Ohio high court vote similarly
COLUMBUS (AP) – Two pioneering women on the Ohio Supreme Court have tended to vote the same in high court
cases, even though they’re from different political parties.
Maureen O’Connor is a Republican and in January was the first woman sworn in as Ohio chief justice. Also
this year, Yvette McGee Brown became the first black woman justice on the state’s highest court.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the two have voted almost identically in court decisions. Court statistics
show they’re the two justices who have been in the majority most often, and they also have sided
together in concurring opinions and dissents.
O’Connor says she and McGee Brown are good friends. McGee Brown describes the chief justice as
"smart, funny, open to feedback and inclusive."
Mass. tavern boss happy as clam with chowder title
BOSTON (AP) – A restaurant celebrating its 25th anniversary this year also is celebrating the prestigious
title of Boston’s Best Chowder.
More than 200 gallons of clam chowder were ladled out to thousands of people at a contest called
Chowderfest here on Sunday to determine who makes New England’s signature dish of clams, cream and
potatoes the best.
The winner: Clancy’s Restaurant in Dennisport, on Cape Cod.
Clancy’s Restaurant and tavern manager Joan Perez says a lot of passion and late-night hours by the
"incredible" kitchen staff went into the chowder. She says the chowder title is especially
dear to the Clancy’s staff because owner Guy Erickson died in April. The 30th annual Chowderfest was
part of Boston Harborfest, a Fourth of July festival. Six restaurants competed.
