ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — John Powers, a graduate of Bowling Green High School and Bowling Green State
University, has been named the head men’s golf coach at St. Bonaventure University.
“John comes from a tremendous golf program at Bowling Green with a highly respected coach in Garry
Winger,” said St. Bonaventure associate athletic director Steve Campbell, a former St. Bona golf coach.
“He had an excellent four-year playing career and learned a lot about the game under Winger’s tutelage.

“His successful playing career and the connections he has built will serve him well in boosting the
program’s recruiting,” Campbell continued. “He’ll make a great addition to not only the golf program,
but also the athletic department and greater St. Bonaventure community.”
Powers was a top scholastic golfer for the Bobcats and on the summer amateur golf circuit. During his
career, he finished 15th at the United States Junior Amateur Championship, was ranked as the No. 2
junior golfer in Ohio, finished his fourth at the Ohio Junior Championships and ninth at the AJGA
Fidelity Investments Junior Classic.
After high school, he spent four years with the Falcons, playing in 123 rounds with an average of 75.18
per round.
During his freshman season, Powers won the University of Dayton Spring Invitational. During his time at
BG, he finished in the top five four times and added three other top-10 finishes. In his final two
seasons, Powers earned top-20 scores on eight occasions.
“John was a great leader as a player and that ultimately prepared him for his role as the men’s golf
coach at St. Bonaventure,” Winger said. “Having known John and his family for almost 20 years, I could
not be prouder of him. I wish him the very best at St. Bonaventure.”
Following the completion of his senior season, he played on the Florida Professional Golf Tour. On Feb.
27 at the Wildwood Open, Powers posted one of the rarest feats in golf – an albatross (double eagle) –
by scoring a two on the 10th hole (par five).
He also served as a golf club intern at Ohio State University during the 2010 golf season. Since March he
has overseen daily operations of the golf shop at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green. He also helped
instruct the junior golf program at the club, and organized member events and tournaments.
Powers replaces Brett Mucheck, who resigned from his position last month. He will starts immediately as
he inherits five returning letter winners and three newcomers to a team which finished 8th at the 2011
Atlantic 10 Championship.
