To the Editor: Leadership BG class thanks community for supporting its e-recycling day project

We would like to thank the Goodwill for helping our community to keep two million pounds of computer and
electronic waste out of landfills in our area alone. The effort began three years ago with a project
Goodwill pioneered with Dell, called Reconnect. It has caught on in other areas of the nation as well,
and involves local Goodwill collection that is then sent to Dell. Dell processes, parts out and melts
down pieces for reuse.
This year’s Leadership BG Class project was an e-recycling day, held on April 29th (with BGSU
sponsorship). This day brought in a semi-truck load of computers & recyclable electronic
equipment from the community. Reported in detail in the days that followed, the amount that came in was
surprising , yet it was a small contribution to the two million pound plus number. More important than
the number of pounds collected, is the simple awareness of being good stewards of our resources. All
year long the Goodwill accepts electronic items (functioning and not) for resale or recycling, so it’s
never too late for that spring cleaning. Many people are unaware of this service, most of us were until
we worked on this project.
Thank you to the Sentinel-Tribune for following the story, and to our community for caring so well for
the beautiful place in which we are privileged to live.
