Road crews will return to E. Wooster to fix drainage problems, sidewalks

Problems with the grade of the pavement and deteriorating concrete on curbs and sidewalks will bring
construction crews back to East Wooster Street this spring.
Director of Public Works Brian Craft told Bowling Green City Council Monday night the street between
Prospect and Summit streets will be redone to fix the grades and slope. Since that time Craft has walked
the area with the contractor and also found spalling (flaking) concrete on some of the new sidewalks.

"The street is too flat to drain properly," Craft said. "The contractor recognized the
problem and has stepped up to make the repairs. The city will have some expense for the interim course
of asphalt, which was never installed," Craft told council. Concrete testing will be done in the
next few days.
Craft hopes work can begin on the sidewalks the week of May 16 and that all of the repairs can be
completed by Memorial Day weekend. However, the schedule is not definite.
The surface will have to be milled to allow the interim and final courses of pavement to be installed to
establish the proper grade.
Craft said the problem is noticeable when water remains along the street longer than it should after a
storm. He said that over a period of time the dampness would hasten deterioration of the street.
Work is to begin Monday on repaving East Poe Road between the CSX railroad tracks and Dunbridge Road. The
project is being funded by federal stimulus money.
Craft said a one-way westbound traffic pattern will be maintained throughout the project. There may be
times when two-way traffic will be allowed.
From the railroad tracks to Wood County Airport the project will be mainly repaving.
Starting in the area of the airport there will be some "full depth repairs" required. Craft
said those repairs are necessary for the longevity of the roadway.
