Ohio baby sitter sentenced for child endangering
COLUMBUS (AP) – An Ohio baby sitter accused of mishandling infants or toddlers and trying to smother them
to stop them from crying has been sentenced on child endangering charges.
The Columbus Dispatch and WBNS-TV report 36-year-old Gianna Cochran of Columbus was sentenced Friday to
the maximum of 25 years in prison. Court records show she was convicted of seven felony counts and five
misdemeanors. She was acquitted on six counts.
Her former boyfriend had installed a hidden camera in their home after becoming concerned in 2009, and
the video was shown during her trial earlier this year. The TV station reports the footage included
images of Cochran carrying a child by the ankle.
Cochran apologized in court.
Sheriff: Family dog kept missing S.C. boy warm
ELGIN, S.C. (AP) – Authorities are crediting the family dog with keeping a missing 2-year-old South
Carolina boy safe and warm as he spent a night outside.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says Tyler Jacobson was found with the dog behind a house across the
street from his home Saturday morning.
His mother reported Tyler missing Friday night after the boy left the room where the family was watching
a movie and didn’t return. Deputies used bloodhounds and a helicopter to search until after midnight but
found nothing.
Matthews says the family’s part-Labrador retriever apparently found the boy and kept watch over him as
temperatures dipped into the 40s.
The woman who lives in the house where Tyler was found said she heard barking outside but ignored it
until she heard crying, too.
