BG gymnasts finish fifth
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Bowling Green’s gymnastics team was fifth in the Mid-American Conference
championships Saturday.
The Falcons scored 192.800. Central Michigan won the seven-team meet with a 195.900.
Top performers for BG were: Danielle Wishart, fourth on the vault (9.825) and tied for fourth on the
floor exercise (9.850); Amber Brewer, tied for seventh on the uneven parallel bars (.9.750); and Dawn
Christman, tied for sixth on the floor exercise (9.825) and 12th all-around (37.925).
Falcon baseball goes 1-2
AVON – Cleveland State pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to post a 3-2 win over
Bowling Green Sunday. BG is 6-10.
Brandon Howard was 5-of-5 for the Falcons and Caly Duncan was 2-for-4 The Falcons had 13 hits in the game
and left 10 runners on base.
On Saturday, Bowling Green and Cleveland State split a doubleheader. CSU won the opener 6-4 and the
Falcons took the second game, 9-7 in 13 innings.
BG had only three hits in the opener with Matt Pitzulo hitting an RBI double. Matt Vannett, from Bowling
Green High School, had an RBI for BG.
Clayton Ruch, from Eastwood High School, got the final four outs for the Vikings, striking out one and
not allowing a hit or a walk, to earn his first save of the season.
In the second game, the Falcons did not have a hit for the first seven innings until T.J. Bosby singled
in the eighth inning.
BG went on to score seven times in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. CSU scored twice in the bottom of the
ninth to force extra innings
BG’s Howard hit a two-RBI single in the 13th and Ethan McKenney closed things out in the bottom of the
13th for the Falcons.
Howard finished 3-for-7 with three RBI. Andrew Kubuski was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Frank
Berry had two RBI.
Ruch also pitched one inning in the second game allowing two hits and a walk and three unearned runs.
Prochaska earns MAC honor
CLEVELAND – Bowling Green women’s basketball senior Lauren Prochaska was named the Mid-American
Conference’s female scholar-athlete of the week last Friday.
Prochaska earns the honor for the second time this season and the fifth time in her BGSU career.
Prochaska has a 3.24 cumulative grade-point average as a sport management major.
BG’s Schlater named to Bench Award watch list
Bowling Green senior Ryan Schlater has been named among the nation’s top 42 catchers in college baseball
and placed on this year’s Johnny Bench Award watch list.
Last season, Schlater finished the year with a .314 batting average, five home runs, 37 runs batted in
and a .466 slugging percentage, and a .977 fielding percentage.
The list will be trimmed down to the semifinalists on May 19 with finalists named on June 6.
Falcon tennis wins
BOARDMAN – Bowling Green’s tennis team beat Youngstown State, 7-0 in a non-conference match Saturday. BG
is 9-3 in dual matches.
Owens baseball now 14-2
Owens Community College won a pair of one-run games to improve to 14-2 overall Sunday.
Owens beat St. Clair County CC, 5-4 and 3-2.
In the opener Blake Schmenk, from Perrysburg High School, hit a two-RBI single and Tyler Brown-Lewis hit
a two-run double for Owens,
In the second game, Garrett Busch was 2-for-2 for Owens. Ryan Hotmer, from Lake High School, pitched the
final two innings to earn his first save of the season. Hotmer walked one and struck out three.
On Saturday in Ashland, Owens split a doubleheader with the Ashland junior varsity. Ashland took the
opener 9-1 and Owens won the second game, 4-0.
Four different Owens players had a hit in Game 1.
In the second game, Scott Robinson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for Owens. He finished with six
innings pitched, while allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out six.
Owens’ Joe Sicker, from Bowling Green High School, hit two doubles and added an RBI, two runs scored and
a stolen base.
